Atlanta's hopes to capture the East's third seed for the NBA Playoffs was dealt a blow Wednesday night with an 88-86 overtime loss to Boston. The Hawks fall two back of the Indiana Pacers and fall into a tie with both the Celtics and the Orlando Magic. Boston holds the tie breaker advantage with the Hawks but Atlanta has the advantage over Orlando. The Hawks and the Magic meet Friday night for the final time during the regular season.

If the playoffs began today then Atlanta would play Boston in the first round with the Celtics getting homecourt advantage. The Hawks have eight game remaining and still have games with the Magic and Celtics as well as the Knicks, Clippers and Mavericks to close out the season. If the Hawks fall to sixth in the standings they would likely face Indiana in the first round. Atlanta has taken two of the three regular season meetings against the Pacers.

The Atlanta Hawks had numerous opportunities at the end of regulation and in overtime to defeat the Boston Celtics but came up just short in the end 88-86.

Atlanta built an early lead in the first half only to see the Celtics come roaring back in the second. Boston's defense suffocated the Hawks offense down the stretch but Atlanta came up with some key defensive stops of their own late. If this game serves as a playoff preview then Atlanta is going to have to figure out how to execute offensively when the Celtics clamp down late in ball games.

Jeff Teague led the way for the Hawks with 21 points and six assists but was also charged with five turnovers. After taking care of the basketball reasonably well in the first half, the Hawks coughed it up in the second which led to numerous opportunities for Boston. Josh Smith added 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists but had six turnovers of his own. Joe Johnson finished with 14 points and was the focal point of Boston's defense at crunchtime.

Kevin Garnett led the Celtics with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Bass added 21 points and 10 boards while Rajon Rondo knotched a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 20 assists. Paul Pierce added 14 for the Celtics but was just 4-19 from the field.

The Atlanta Hawks started fast and lead their potential playoff preview with the Boston Celtics 48-40 at halftime. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead only to see the Celtics close the first quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 26-25 advantage.

Atlanta bounced back in the second quarter outscoring the Celtics 23-14. Josh Smith came out in a rhythm and leads Atlanta with 12 points and six rebounds. Jeff Teague added 11 points and Joe Johnson eight for the Hawks. Atlanta shot 47 percent in the first half and did a good job of taking care of the basketball but was just 1-10 from three-point range in the first half.

Brandon Bass turned in a solid half for the Celtics finishing with 13 points and five boards. Kevin Garnett added 12 points but no other Celtics player has more than four.

The playoff race in the Eastern Conference can't get any tighter as tonight's Hawks-Celtics matchup could go a long way in determining who gets homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks enter play tonight with a 34-23 record and exactly one game better than the Boston Celtics. A loss to the Celtics tonight would give Boston the season series and the tie breaker should the two teams finished tied.

Boston leads the Atlantic Division and that is why they are currently listed as the fourth seed and ahead of the Hawks who currently have a better record. However, if Atlanta remains fifth and has a better record than the Celtics then the Hawks will still get homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Atlanta enters play tonight just a half game ahead of Orlando and one game behind the Indiana Pacers for third place. So the situation remains fluid. The Hawks will take on the Magic on Friday and could catch a break if Dwight Howard is unable to play due to a sore back. Howard sat out the Magic's loss to the Wizards on Tuesday.
