Tim Hudson will make his 2012 season debut for the Braves on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hudson had spinal fusion surgery during the offseason and began the year on the disabled list. Hudson was shooting for a late April or early May return and was right on schedule after four minor league rehab starts.

Hudson struggled in both of his starts for Single-A Rome but the goal at that stop was to simply build stamina. He was much sharper in two starts for Triple-A Gwinnett where he allowed one earned run in two starts.

Hudson's return to the rotation didn't quite go as expected. Most figured it would be Randall Delgado that would be sent down to make room for Hudson on the roster. However, Jair Jurrjens struggles led to a surprise demotion for the former All-Star.

Tim Hudson allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings Tuesday night at Gwinnett and is penciled in to make his 2012 season debut with the Braves on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I feel like we're going pretty good from a team standpoint," Hudson said. "The chemistry is really good. We're playing some good baseball. Whatever I can do to come in and make some kind of positive impact, that's always what I'm looking to do."

Hudson will take the place of the struggling Jair Jurrjens who was sent down after struggling again on Monday against the Dodgers. The Braves called up reliever Cory Gearrin to replace Jurrjens in the short term but will likely send him back down over the weekend once Hudson is activated.

Tim Hudson took yet another big step to returning to the Major Leagues on Wednesday evening, throwing five innings and allowing just one unearned run in a rehab start with the Gwinnett Braves. The veteran righty felt no ill-effects from his surgically repaired lower back, likely meaning he will need just one more start in the Minors before joining the Atlanta Braves once again.

Hudson threw 76 pitches on Wednesday (48 for strikes) and set down 12 straight batters at one point. He allowed just two hits and walked three batters, striking out four.

Look for Hudson to throw upwards of 90 pitches in his final rehab start next week, and assuming he does not have setbacks following that appearance, it appears that he may be on pace to pitch in the final weekend of April against the Pirates at Turner Field.

The next stop on Tim Hudson's rehab assignment will be a Wednesday outing for Triple-A Gwinnett at Coolray Field. Hudson is expected to throw 85-90 pitches on Wednesday against Norfolk. After that outing he is scheduled to pitch six days later again for Gwinnett against Charlotte where he could throw as many as 100 pitches.

Regaining stamina is the primary goal for Hudson whose numbers aren't very impressive from his two starts at Class-A Rome. In those two outings he compiled an 0-2 record and a 7.71 ERA. If everything goes according to plan then Hudson could rejoin the Braves rotation as soon as April 29 or 30 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Randall Delgado will likely be the odd man out in the rotation once Hudson is ready to return if there are no other injuries to the starting rotation between now and then.

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson saw the impact that Chipper Jones made to the lineup when he returned from injury, so it's Hudson's hope that he can make a similar comeback.

During the offseason, Hudson underwent surgery for a herniated disk and since then has been making his recovery in the Braves minor league farm system. It was reported that Hudson would make his return to the Braves on May 1 after his minor league stint, but the veteran could be back even sooner.

With at least two more rehab outings, Hudson could return on April 27 against the Pirates at the earliest. Or if the Braves give him an extra day here or there, he could return later in that home stand against the Pirates or Phillies. - David O'Brien

Hudson is feeling better but his performance has been sort of up and down. He gave up nine hits and five runs in four innings Thursday night in Rome in his second rehab showing. However, he did throw 45 of his 62 pitches for strikes, with no walks, one strikeout and one wild pitch.

Tim Hudson is working to get himself back to Atlanta so he can dominate the league the way he has for nearly a decade now. Despite undergoing back surgery just a few short months ago to repair a herniated disk, Hudson is making rehab starts in the Minor Leagues and is projected to return by the start of May. After working two innings last week, the 36-year-old veteran made yet another start for the Rome Braves on Thursday.

His stat line wasn't very impressive, but Hudson said he felt great afterwards. This is great news for the Braves.

Hudson worked four innings and allowed five runs to score on nine hits, although many of the balls put in play just managed to scoot under a defender's glove. He did not allow any homers and gave up just one extra-base hit. Working on just getting comfortable on the mound, Hudson paid very little attention to base runners and came away with just one strikeout.

As he told the AJC following his performance:

"For the most part I feel pretty good where I'm at physically, just got to make some better pitches," Hudson said. "Obviously that's going to come as I have more time on the mound and more bullpens, working on that kind of stuff on the side."

Look for Hudson to have at least two more Minor League rehab appearances, with a third possible depending on how he feels. You have to remember he missed just about all of Spring Training. For a veteran like he is, his body is about a month behind right now.

Tim Hudson, who underwent back surgery last November, made his spring training debut on Monday and was sensational, throwing two innings of work and allowing just one hit.

Hudson threw 25 pitches in total, 16 of which were strikes, and the right hander was feeling good afterwards, "It felt normal. Honestly, I went out there and tried to pitch like I was in a real game. I was trying to make pitches and get some swings and misses. I wasn't really trying to finesse around anything. At this point, I need to see where I'm at. And so far, so good."

Hudson remains on track to make his regular season debut in late April or early May, and is expected to continue to add an inning of work in each of his upcoming starts.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez was encouraged by his outing, "He mixed all his pitches. I'm sure he probably didn't think he was as sharp as he should have been, but I thought he was. For the first time in a while, and getting out there in front of a crowd, it was good. I was happy for him."

The Atlanta Braves will look to have their ace starting pitcher Tim Hudson back into the starting rotation sometime this year, but nailing down a specific time still seems to be a bit of an issue. Hudson is recovering from a lumbar spine-fusion surgery (sounds painful) that took place back in late November, and 3 1/2 months later the Columbus native is "optimistic" on joining the rotation by May 1.

"I think [May 1] at the latest," Hudson said. "It’d be hard to say [if he can return earlier] because I’ve got to build up to that. I could be back in April but it might be a four- or five-inning thing. April is my month of spring training games — unless I’m able to pitch sooner here [in camp] sooner than we thought."

The Braves are planning on starting Hudson in the minor leagues until he's fully ready to come up to the big league club. At 36, he's the longest tenured pitcher on the Braves staff and the unquestioned leader of the rotation.
