The rain couldn't wash away the inevitable at Roland Garros: Rafael Nadal is the king of clay. The Spaniard cemented his claim to be considered the greatest clay-court player ever, capturing his seventh title at Roland Garros by defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in the 2012 French Open.

As much as Nadal's dominance, the rain became a key narrative throughout this Open, especially in key moments, some seemingly aimed at Djokovic. After Nadal led by two sets, Djokovic was able to break through momentarily, winning eight straight games after trailing at a break to take the third set, and briefly lead the fourth by a 2-1 mark.

A delay of 34 minutes in the second set seemed to hurt Djokovic, down 3-5 at the time. He'd come back to lose his serve and the set. Conversely, the delay that moved the action to Monday paused Djokovic's 2-1 lead in the fourth set, which Nadal came back and won.

Nadal, who's pushing for his seventh consecutive French Open title, is up two sets to one on Djokovic.

Not only did Maria Sharapova reclaim the WTA's No. 1 tennis ranking during her stay at Roland Garros, but she also managed to do something historical -- complete the career Grand Slam.

Sharapova defeated Sara Errani in straight sets on Saturday, winning 6-3, 6-2, and claiming the 2012 French Open title.

Sharapova's most recent Grand Slam title prior to Saturday came back in 2008, when she won the Australian Open. Sharapova won the 2006 US Open and won her first Grand Slam title in 2004, when she was just 17 years old, winning at Wimbledon.

After battling injuries for a few years, it appears that Sharapova is back and better than ever. Sharapova's No. 1 ranking comes seven years after she was first crowned with the No. 1 ranking in 2005.

Though she lost the 2012 Australian Open, Sharapova made it all the way to the finals before losing. We'll see if Sharapova can claim either of the two remaining Grand Slam titles this year, with Wimbledon and the US Open both still on the docket.

The men's final for the 2012 French Open will be according to plan; No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Rafael Nadal had little trouble winning their respective semifinal matches on Friday.

Djokovic took down No. 3 Roger Federer 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 and has now won 27 straight Grand Slam matches. He is one win away from becoming the first man in 43 years to win four straight major championships. From SI.com:

"And look, I'll try to prepare for that match and get my hands on that trophy, if I can."

Nadal took down No. 6 and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Nadal has owned Roland Garros, winning 51 of 52 career matches. Sunday's final should be a historic match, no matter who wins. From SI.com:

Maria Sharapova is now one step away from completing the career grand slam.

The Russian defeated No. 4 Czech Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the final of the 2012 French Open. The tournament at Roland Garros is the only major tournament that has eluded Sharapova. The win also moved her into the No. 1 ranking in the world.

Sharapova had her right shoulder surgically repaired in October 2008 and hadn't been able to find consistent success since then. But with her ascension back to the top of the tennis rankings, it is clear Sharapova finally is back to form. From ESPN.com:

And not just at that, but at a level to get to No. 1 in the world and a first Roland Garros final for me," Sharapova said. "So a very special day, no doubt."

In the other semifinal, No. 21 Sara Errani defeated No. 6 Samantha Stosur of Austrailia 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. The Italian had never made it past the third round of major tournament until reaching the Australian Open quarters earlier this year. She entered the French Open without a win against a top-10 opponent. Now, she's beaten two in a row and will go for No. 3 — against No. 1 — on Saturday. Again, from ESPN.com:

Two of the top men's tennis players barely made it out of the 2012 French Open quarterfinals on Tuesday.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic came within one point of defeat against No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga four times, but won each point and pulled away in the final set for a 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory. With the home crowd behind him, the Frenchman Tsonga came so close to pulling the stunning upset, but Djokovic showed why he is the top seed. With the win, Djokovic is one step closer to winning his fourth straight Grand Slam — something that no men's player has done in 43 years.

He admitted he felt the pressure of the home crowd. From ESPN.com:

Physically, we're all fit, all hitting the ball well. But mentally, it's just a matter of a point here, a point there. That's sport. The one that mentally pushes more in some moments -- and gets a bit lucky -- gets the win."

In the day's other men's quarterfinal, No. 3 Roger Federer lost the first two sets against No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro, but rallied for a 3-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-0, 6-3 win. Del Potro upset Federer in the 2009 U.S. Open final, but appeared to be more affected by his left knee, wrapped in tape, as Tuesday's match went along.

Nonetheless, both stars — Djokovic and Federer — earned their way into the semis.

Federer, the No. 3 seed, will now awaits the winner of a fourth-round duel between Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro.

Djokovic was also a survivor. The No. 1 overall seed on the men's side went down two sets against Italian Andreas Seppi and it looked like Nole was down for the count. However, Djokovic rallied for a five-set victory, winning 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Djokovic will face the winner of a match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
