After three miserable months to begin the 2011 season, Dan Uggla was arguably the best hitter in the National League during the second half of the season. Uggla has struggled mightily since June, but he has shown signs of life in recent days. It appears the Braves' slugging second baseman has finally awaken, propelling his club to a wild 12-6 victory over the Phillies.

Tim Hudson was given an early 6-1 lead, which was aided by a two-run double from Hudson himself in the second inning. Despite his near-perfect record when staked to a lead of 3+ runs, the veteran righty suddenly lost command in the middle innings. A three-run homer from Ryan Howard capped off a five-run fifth inning, which sent Hudson to the clubhouse.

With a tie score of 6-6, Uggla came to the plate with the bases loaded. After falling behind 0-2 in the count, he battled back and lined a ball down the left field line to clear the bases. He then came around to score on a throwing error to push the lead to 10-6.

Michael Bourn doubled home a run in the top of the eighth after Tyler Pastornicky drew a leadoff walk. Bourn was brought home on a groundout from Freddie Freeman.

Atlanta's bullpen continued their incredible work since the All-Star Break on Wednesday. Luis Avilan, Cory Gearrin, Chad Durbin, Eric O'Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel combined to toss 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit and one walk. They struck out six.

The Braves will have a much-needed off-day on Thursday before heading to New York for a three-game series with the Mets.

Michael Bourn has been a terrific addition to the Atlanta Braves from the first day he arrived in town. After years of uncertainty in center field, Bourn has done more than solidify the position and has emerged into one of the premier leadoff men in the game.

As he gets set to hit free agency for the first time in a couple of months, Bourn and his agent, Scott Boras, are going to get paid a lot of money. And if one recent dollar figure is accurate, you can bet the Braves will be without the speedy center fielder next season.

According to this report from Buster Olney, Bourn figures to receive $16-22 million in free agency each season for five or six years. He is only 29 years old and on pace for the best year of his career, so these numbers are probably accurate.

The Phillies and Nationals, teams who can afford to spend a lot more than the Braves, are mentioned as two clubs very interested in Bourn. The Giants have also been known to have interest in him. And of course you always have to worry about the Red Sox, Rangers, White Sox and other American League teams getting involved, as well.

Unless these dollar figures are inaccurate and Bourn is willing to "settle" for less than $15 million a season through 2016 or 2017, he won't be in Atlanta. This is a tough blow for the Bravos, especially with no apparent in-house options for the position.

Frank Wren is expected to have about $35 million freed up for spending in free agency, but there are plenty of areas to address. A front-end starting pitcher will not come cheap, nor will a third baseman (or left fielder if Martin Prado shifts to third). Combine these costs with eventual raises to Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel and others, and you can see why spending a ton on an aging center fielder would not be wise.

Enjoy the next few months of Michael Bourn, because he's almost certainly gone once the winter hits. It's a sad reality, but one that will remain as long as Liberty Media continues to hold the franchise back financially.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has done a nice job giving his hitters a night off this season, especially when it comes to Brian McCann and Chipper Jones. While there are capable replacements for each player on the bench, neither can bring what Mac or Chipper bring to the lineup on a nightly basis.

With an off-day looming on Thursday, Gonzalez has opted to rest McCann this evening against right-handed starter Kyle Kendrick. It's unusual for him to sit against a righty, but the night off will give the catcher about 72 hours of rest and will only require him to miss one game.

Dan Uggla, who sat on Tuesday as part of a scheduled day off, has returned to the lineup.

Tim Hudson has been cruising of late, winning four straight starts (including his 100th career win as a Brave) and providing some much needed stability in the Atlanta rotation. He'll look for a fifth in the row as Atlanta aims to take the series with the fading Phillies on Wednesday night after Cole Hamels shut out the Braves 3-0 on Tuesday. Dan Uggla's return will be likely after he was held out against Hamels due to a lifetime average of .145 against the knuckleballer.

Throughout the long 162-game grind of a season a team is bound to run into a pitcher who is nearly perfect. Cole Hamels was that guy on Tuesday night, leading the Phillies to a 3-0 win over the Braves.

Hamels did not allow a runner to reach scoring position all night. He scattered five hits over nine innings of work, striking out six and walking none.

Mike Minor struggled in the first inning, but he continued his strong work after that. He ended up tossing seven innings, allowing three runs to score on seven hits and two walks.

Jimmy Rollins doubled to leadoff the game, and he was driven in by a double from Domonic Brown. Chase Utley was retired harmlessly with the score 1-0, but a two-run homer to deep center field from Ryan Howard pushed the deficit to three runs.

No Atlanta hitter recorded more than one hit. They simply had no answer for Hamels, who was recently signed to a deal worth $140+ million.

The two clubs will meet in the series finale on Wednesday night.

The Braves won comfortably against the Phillies on Monday in their series opener thanks to the dominating performance from Ben Sheets. This time, Atlanta is hoping for similar results with Mike Minor (6-7, 5.01 ERA) on the hill taking on Cole Hamels (11-6, 3.34 ERA) in the pitching duel.

A win on Tuesday would award the Braves the series win against their NL East division foe, while it would be Atlanta's third straight. More importantly, it would be the Braves' eight straight wins against the Phillies.

Citizens Bank Ballpark has been a house of horrors for the Braves in recent years, but that has not been the last few months. Atlanta won their fourth-straight game in Philadelphia (and seventh-straight over their NL East foes) on Monday night as they won by a score of 6-1.

Ben Sheets continued to pitch well against the new-look Phillies. He tossed 7.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits and a walk. Sheets did not strike any batters out. Vance Worley started for the Phillies and was not sharp, pitching just 3.2 innings while surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks.

Freddie Freeman ripped a two-out double down the first base line to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead in the third inning. A wild pitch from Worley then scored Freeman with Brian McCann at the plate. Michael Bourn came up with an RBI-single in the next frame to make it 4-0.

John Mayberry plated the lone run of the game for Philly with a solo homer in the fourth.

McCann continued to punish the Phillies in the seventh with an RBI-single to right. Jason Heyward crushed his 18th home run of the season in the ninth to push the lead to 6-1.

Cristhian Martinez came in and worked a perfect ninth inning to secure the victory. The Braves are now 63-46 on the season, their best mark of the year.
