The future NCAA playoff system could add a seventh bowl game to its semifinal rotation. Nothing definite has been decided, according to Sports Illustrated, but the option for a seventh bowl appears on the table. University presidents approved a playoff plan in June that would rotate the semifinals among six bowl games.

Under the agreed-upon format, two of the six bowl games would the semifinals each year. The other four, meanwhile, would host high-profile games of their own. For non-semifinal years, three bowl games have decided to host match-ups based on conference tie-ins. The Rose Bowl would keep its matchup the Big Ten and Pac 12. The Champions Bowl (for which Atlanta still remains in the running) would pit a Big 12 team against an SEC team. And the Orange Bowl would pit an ACC team against either Notre Dame, and SEC team, or a Big 10 team. The other three bowls, one of which could be the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, have chosen to allow open access. They will be able to choose teams from any conference in the country.

According to Team Speed Kills, a seventh bowl would also have open access. Such an arrangement might give more access to smaller-conference teams to play in high-profile games.

The new college football playoff system, set to be implemented in 2014, could feature eight bowl games, as well as the national championship game, according to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.

Per the Wall Street Journal, concerns about the access of smaller conferences to the system prompted the BCS leaders to reconsider their proposal. They will reportedly meet this week to discuss the new possible bowl additions as well as revenue sharing.

The Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl and Champions Bowl have all been voted to be included while the remaining bowls in the new postseason system have yet to be determined.

An additional two bowls to the playoff system would allow for more schools to have a chance to enter the playoff system, and thus, have a chance at claiming the national title.

It had long been considered inevitable that the playoff system would eventually expand past six bowls, and it appears that this reality could come sooner rather than later.

Chick-fil-A Bowl President Gary Stokan has submitted a bid for Atlanta to host a postseason college football bowl game between teams from the SEC and Big 12.

Chick-fil-A Bowl President Gary Stokan has submitted a bid for the city of Atlanta to host the Champions Bowl, a postseason college football bowl game that will pit the SEC against the Big 12, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The AJC lists New Orleans and Arlington, Texas, as frontrunners to host the game, with Atlanta considered a long shot:

Atlanta already hosts -- and wants to continue to host - the SEC Championship game annually. The SEC might be reluctant to put back-to-back events in the same city, and the Big 12 might be reluctant to put the new event on what could be regarded as an SEC home field.

Arlington is clearly a frontrunner because it's the home of Cowboys Stadium, a brand new, state-of-the-art facility with a capacity to hold 100,000-plus fans. That means more ticket revenue and a more-or-less neutral site, as opposed to Atlanta, which is solidly in SEC country.

The Champions Bowl is set to begin play in 2014.

It's no surprise, but the city of Atlanta will join New Orleans and Arlington, Texas as the only three official bids for the SEC/Big 12 Champions Bowl:

With a potential new football stadium in talks thanks to the Falcons, the city of Atlanta is aggressively courting as many college football events and properties as possible. Considering the city already hosts the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic (expanding to two games this year) and the SEC Championship as well as the College Football Hall of Fame's new location, Atlanta is aggressively pursuing the title of America's college football capital.

It's unclear if the Champions Bowl will rotate or be housed in a single city. New Orleans is currently the home of the Sugar Bowl, while Arlington hosts the SEC/Big 12 Cotton Bowl.

It appears that 10 cities are possible future destinations for the Champions Bowl starting in 2014. This would be the SEC-Big 12 postseason matchup and would be guaranteed a regular spot in the rotation to host national semifinals, possibly an average of once every three years.

The cities that have been sent request for proposals by the Champions Bowl are right here:

You can think of the Champions Bowl sort of like the Rose Bowl, but the issue has been about whether or not these two conferences to get the kind of money the Pac 12 and Big Ten are getting from the Rose Bowl.
