It didn't take long for Jarvis Jones to properly welcome Missouri to the SEC. The linebacker had one of the strongest performances of his career in the 41-20 win for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Jones finished with eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and an interception on Saturday. On Sunday, he was named the nation's defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The performance earned rave reviews from his defensive coordinator.

"I think it was a special game," Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Sunday of Jones’ performance. "… He is a special guy that works extremely hard in his preparation. He’s really instinctive. He does a lot of things for us."

The next test for Jones and Georgia will be their game against Florida Atlantic on Saturday.

Youth and speed are nice to have, but the Tigers found out the hard way that defense still rules in their new conference.

There are any number of metaphors you could use for the way the Georgia Bulldogs and their brand of, to use Missouri D-lineman Sheldon Richardson's words, "old man football" withstood an initial salvo from Mizzou and gradually pounded the will out of the Tigers in their first-ever SEC game, but I think this about sums it up:

Face it, Mizzou, we're older and we have more defense. And therein lies the problem for the Sheldon Richardsons and offense-obsessed bloggers of the world who wanted to look at this through a strictly scheme-vs.-scheme lens: It's not just enough for your offensive philosophy to be more innovative than the other guy's, or even trickier to defend in a vacuum. This is a game of matchups, so your fancy spread offense isn't competing against the other guy's (allegedly) decrepit pro set, they're competing against the other guy's defense. So it didn't take long before the "old-man offense vs. young-guy offense" narrative went straight out the window, to be replaced by the "Can former Big 12 teams hack it against SEC defenses?" narrative — and the Tigers got exactly the answer to that question they most feared.

Not that Mizzou was guilty of bringing a knife to a gunfight, or that they underestimated what they'd be up against — even after Georgia's spotty defensive showing against Buffalo, I'm sure Gary Pinkel and his staff knew better than to do that. But the fact remains that they very rarely had to face players like Jarvis Jones or John Jenkins in their former conference, and it showed Saturday night. Last week on this site, Michael Elkon expressed a hope that the addition of Mizzou and Texas A&M to the conference might finally shake up the SEC's stodgy lack of innovation on offense; that may yet happen, particularly with both schools now having direct access to the fertile recruiting grounds of the Deep South. But what Saturday night showed is that the learning curve for those programs will be just as steep, if not steeper, as they struggle to adapt to a dramatically higher standard on defense.

Because Georgia showed that as long as you can smother people on defense and create turnovers deep in the opponent's territory, you can still play "old man football" on offense and get away with it. Very little Georgia's offense did Saturday night was unexpected, and not much was especially exciting, either. Aaron Murray still isn't showing the touch one would expect of a third-year starter touted as a Heisman dark horse (though other than Marlon Brown, his receivers didn't help him out much). The O-line's pass protection improved as the game went on, but its run blocking was spotty at best — other than a thrilling 44-yard burst from Todd Gurley in the second half, the ground game exhibited little of the pop it showed in the season opener — with John Theus demonstrating that even five-star blue-chip recruits all have to be freshmen at some point. Some of this you could chalk up to the nervousness of playing the first SEC tilt of the season on the road in a completely unfamiliar environment, but if the kinks still aren't sorted out by the time Georgia faces Vanderbilt in two weeks, the grumbling about Mike Bobo will only get louder.

Of course, if the defense plays against the Commodores like it did against the Tigers, it may be academic. Down three defensive starters against a tricky offense in hostile territory, the D still did everything it needed to do and then some; the mind reels at what they might be able to do when they're back at full strength personnel-wise. If that's the flip side to "old man football," it's one that has served the SEC quite well for decades now. Missouri and Texas A&M will certainly show the conference's old dogs some new tricks one of these days, but for right now, they're going to have to respect their elders.

The Georgia Bulldogs didn't appreciate the "old man football" comments they heard from the Missouri Tigers during the week. So they used it as extra motivation before defeating the first-year SEC team by three touchdowns on Saturday.

Here are some thoughts from wide receiver Marlon Brown, via Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"It definitely made us mad. But we just took it as something to give us a little fire under our butts, and we just outlasted them at the end.

"That got under our skin. But at the same time, we had to make it about us. Our team, our time. We just wanted to go out there and play."

UGA fans even chanted "old man football" during the game just as a reminder to the Tigers.

The latest edition of the USA Today Coaches Poll is out and the Georgia Bulldogs hold on to No. 7 spot in this week's rankings. The top of the poll looks the same as the AP rankings with Alabama occupying the top spot. However, the coaches moved LSU past USC putting the Tigers in the No. 2 position. The Trojans check in at No. 3 and are followed by Oregon, Oklahoma and Florida State.

Arkansas plummets all the way to No. 21 after the Razorbacks' upset loss to Louisiana Monroe. Wisconsin and Nebraska fall nine and 10 spots respectively after losses while Oklahoma State moves completely out of the poll.

Georgia Bulldogs freshman kicker Marshall Morgan spent Saturday's game against the Missouri Tigers impressive and head-scratching at the same time.

Morgan was first to get the Bulldogs on the board at Faurot Field with a 52-yard field goal in the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3. According to Jonathan Branch of Dog Bytes Online, it was the longest made field goal for a Georgia kicker in a road game since Blair Walsh hit a 53-yarder against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2009.

Right before halftime, Georgia scored on a five-play, 71-yard drive to get within one point at 10-9. Morgan then missed the extra point, pushing it wide right. It was the first missed extra-point attempt for a Georgia kicker since Walsh missed one against the Kentucky Wildcats in 2010.

At the time, it seemed like a big moment. Neither team had much success moving the ball, and one point could have been the difference in the game. But Georgia broke the game open in the second half and won 41-20.

Things weren't pretty throughout the early part of Georgia's 41-20 win over the Missouri Tigers Saturday night. Aaron Murray struggled early on and the Bulldogs at one point fell behind 17-9. However, as Dawg Sports writer T Kyle King points out they never panicked, and the result ended up being a decisive win over a conference foe:

The Bulldogs finished the night with fewer first downs, fewer yards, and fewer plays, but with more points and more heart. A balanced Red and Black attack---Georgia attempted 35 passes and ran the ball 35 times---produced more yards per pass, more yards per rush, and fewer turnovers, albeit only slightly so. It just took a while for Mark Richt's preternatural calm to infect his team, as it has so many times since that day in Knoxville eleven years ago when his players, and we, began to believe again in the Bulldogs' ability to enter a hostile environment and emerge victorious.

In this case Richt's calm demeanor served him and his team well as it would have been very easy to panic early. With Aaron Murray struggling and little to no running room for the ground game it didn't look like the Bulldogs would ever be able to move the ball. Even when they did they couldn't count on something as simple as an extra point to be executed correctly.

Despite the early struggles, Georgia did get it together and the result is a 2-0 start and a feel good victory for the team.

Malcolm Mitchell returned to the field for the Bulldogs on Saturday at Missouri, but playing cornerback instead of wide receiver. It's going to take time for Mitchell to get fully comfortable just being on the football field, as he continues to recover from his ankle injury.

Mitchell even said he felt soreness after Saturday's game.

"It has been a while," Mitchell said. "It was fun. It's just one of those things you have to get back in the flow of."

Eventually, Mitchell is going to play both ways, but it's key for him to get that ankle right.

"I'm taking it one game at a time," said Mitchell, who said his ankle was sore following Saturday night's win. "I gotta let my ankle heal all the way up first before I do any two-ways, that's for sure."
