Key offensive players for Georgia Tech were injured in Saturday's blowout against Boston College.

Three important starters on offense left Saturday's game against Boston College with injuries. Offensive tackles Will Jackson and Ray Beno and B-back Zach Laskey all went down against Boston College, but head coach Paul Johnson had no updates on any of their injury statuses after the game.

Jackson and Laskey suffered shoulder injuries and Beno injured an ankle. None of them returned to the game, as they were replaced by Morgan Bailey, Bryan Chamberlain and David Sims, respectively.

On his last carry, Laskey logged his second 100-yard rushing performance of the season. Laskey carried the ball 13 times for 101 yards before the injury. For the season, he's put up 426 yards on 76 carries, but his lone touchdown of the season was in a blowout against Presbyterian in the second game of the season.

The Yellow Jackets went on to win the game 37-17 and were rarely threatened by the Eagles, even with Tech not playing its best game losing those key players to injuries.

Washington rushed 17 times for 63 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday to join the record books.

Washington, a senior quarterback, leads the team with 887 yards passing and four touchdowns, while completing 61.6 percent of his passes. He also leads the team in rushing with 111 carries for 471 yards and 15 touchdowns.

With the team struggling on both ends of the ball, Washington has recently split time with first year quarterback Vad Lee,who completed 2-of-6 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown on Saturday.
Georgia Tech quarterback Vad Lee provided a spark for the Yellow Jackets in Saturday's win against Boston College.

Georgia Tech backup quarterback Vad Lee only completed two of his six pass attempts for 89 yards in Saturday's win against the Boston College Eagles, one of which went for a touchdown. But beyond the numbers, Lee wanted to provide a spark for a struggling Georgia Tech team that went into this game as losers of their last three contests.

Lee knows that his playing time is really established by how he looks in practice, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"I was just wanted to go out and have a great practice. I told myself every day I'm going to be great no matter what. As a team we were going through adversity and I tried to bring a role of picking us up and bringing energy to the team."

Starter Tevin Washington completed four of his eight pass attempts for 83 yards, but true to form, Georgia Tech used its powerful ground game to run the ball 76 times for 391 yards.

Lee played a key role in Tech's success in the run game, with 62 yards rushing on 11 carries, including a 24-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

In five games this year, Lee has completed 8-of-15 passes for 220 yards and a two touchdowns while rushing 30 times for 248 yards and four touchdowns.

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson called the team's kicking game "a mess" following the Yellow Jackets' 20-point win against the Boston College Eagles.

Georgia Tech was able to snap its three-game losing skid with a win against the Boston College Eagles on Saturday, but Tech head coach Paul Johnson knows his team left some points on the field.

Junior kicker from Dawsonville David Scully missed a pair of field goal attempts. Jeremy Moore made his lone 32-yard field goal attempt but failed on an extra point try. Justin Moore was also unsuccessful on a field goal. That means the Yellow Jackets went 1-4 on field goal tries, and 4-5 on PATs.

Here was Johnson after Saturday's game.

"Our kicking game was a mess. The problem right now is we lost our holder, so that causes a lot of problems. We left 10 points out there. We did enough on special teams to lose twice against a better team."

That's where Tech is fortunate in this one, having not played a very good team in trying to snap its losing streak. The Jackets won by 20 points, but to a Boston College team with just one win on the season and going through a pretty long five-game losing streak of its own.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated Boston College handily in Saturday's game, but the defense was a bit vulnerable in the middle of the field at times.

Georgia Tech fans were just glad to see the team get a victory against Boston College on Saturday. But the performance, while a 20-point win, wasn't exactly an aspiring effort partially due to the quality of the opponent.

The Yellow Jackets had been losers of three straight before beating the Eagles. But Boston College still has just one win on the season and has lost five straight. The Eagles have an 0-4 record in ACC action so far.

So Tech was supposed to win this game, in a sense, because someone was supposed to lose and the comparable mediocrity wasn't in BC's favor. The issue Tech fans at SB Nation's blog, From the Rumble Seat, had with their team was the tendency to give up big plays in the middle of the field.

Tech defenders are working on something called "re-routing" receivers, where they force receivers to break their routes. But it was executed poorly, resulting in the few big plays the Eagles had.

Here's some insight from FRS on the defense adjusting to a new signal caller:

I asked Isaiah Johnson what the biggest difference practicing under Coach Groh and Coach Kelly was, and he said something to the effect of it's slower and faster paced. That is, Coach Groh spat out a lot of information all at once that they had to swallow at a quick rate, so it was faster under him in that regard. It's faster under Kelly in the physical sense, because he's not having them constantly adjust based on where one receiver is going or not going, he's just letting them play. This, to me, makes it the most clear why Groh wasn't working, he was asking them to memorize and think too much based off small tweaks the offense was making. Quayshawn agreed: now they get to react to simple keys like alignments in at the line of scrimmage or what routes a guy was running, it's just easy. I heard the players talk about how they got to "just play" under this new defensive command, and they seemed very happy with it.

His play in practice was impressive in the week leading up to the Boston College game, but has been poor at other times.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets dismantled the Boston College Eagles on Saturday, 37-17, as was to be expected.

The Yellow Jackets snapped a three-game skid and the team looked complete in the first half as they raced out to a 28-3 lead over the Eagles. The second half was a little bit of a different story, as they were outscored 14-9.

As From the Rumble Seat wrote, a 20-point win against the lowly Eagles looks good on paper. But for improvement's sake, the Yellow Jackets had a lot of mental breaks happen in the second half that shouldn't have occurred. Against lesser quality opponents like the Eagles, it's just easier to make up for them.

Not to say there wasn't a lot of good (1st half), but play like that against most any other team and we won't be so much winning as we will be jumping off of tall objects.

From the Rumble Seat wrote that the secondary was particularly prone to coverage issues, something that occurs way too often when the Yellow Jackets are up by a sizable margin. Both of the Eagles' two touchdowns were results of coverage breakdowns in the Yellow Jackets' defense.

Consider this: in the 1st half, BC had 7 first downs and 120 passing yards. By the end of the game, those numbers had gone up to 15 and 264. That may be linear growth, but a lot more of those yards came on big passing plays, largely up the middle, than before (53 yds in the 1st as opposed to 104 in the 2nd).

Obviously with the score as it was, it wasn't all bad for the Yellow Jackets. The defense was rock solid in the first half and the offense didn't really let up throughout the game. Georgia Tech came close to 400 yards on rushing (391 yards) and only allowed 32 yards on the ground to the Eagles.
