The Atlanta Hawks are off to a middling start in the 2012-13 season.

The Atlanta Hawks are 2-2 after a few weeks of the 2012 NBA season, trailing the Miami Heat by two games in the Southeast Division.

Atlanta had a chance to pull even with the Heat on Friday, but fell short against them, losing 95-89 at Philips Arena.

Around the league, there are few surprises bigger than the 4-0 New York Knicks. Many felt Mike Woodson's team would be competitive and make the playoffs, but few thought it would dominate against solid teams.

In Los Angeles, the Lakers have been nothing short of awful, getting Mike Brown fired en route to a 2-4 start. With Steve Nash on the shelf, L.A. will need to pick it up in hopes of getting towards the top of the Western Conference.

The Boston Celtics are also off to a very uneven start at 2-3. Doc Rivers' team looks old, barely winning against the Washington Wizards twice while losing to the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.

The Hawks had their chances against a depleted Miami team, but couldn't close the deal.

Miami 95, Atlanta 89: Despite leading the Miami Heat by four points at the half, the Atlanta Hawks couldn't pull off the upset on Friday night. Dwyane Wade was sidelined for the evening with a cold, but LeBron James stepped up, coming within one assist of a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine helpers.

The Hawks were paced by Jeff Teague, who poured in 20 points. Teague shot 7-of-8 from the field, including going 2-for-2 from downtown. Anthony Morrow added 17 points for Atlanta while Josh Smith contributed with 13 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough.

Brooklyn 107, Orlando 68: The Brooklyn Nets went on the road and hammered the Orlando Magic, showing many experts what they expected to see from the outset out of both teams.

Five players scored in double-figures for the Nets en route to the blowout, with Brook Lopez collecting a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

New York 104, Dallas 94: The New York Knicks kept their undefeated record intact against a plucky Dallas Mavericks team, largely due to Carmelo Anthony. The superstar had 31 points and seven rebounds, leading the charge on both sides of the court.

O.J. Mayo was incredibly hot early but shot his team out of the game late, finishing with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting.

A late run by the Miami Heat sent the Atlanta Hawks to a 95-89 loss Friday night at Philips Arena.

The Atlanta Hawks went toe to toe with the defending NBA Champions for three quarters before a late run in the fourth sent them to a 95-89 loss. Miami outscored Atlanta 23-18 in the fourth and LeBron James provided the dagger with just 13.6 remaining.

With Atlanta trailing 91-89, the Hawks ran a nice high, low play with Josh Smith and Al Horford who couldn't put in the lob pass. The Heat grabbed the rebound and James ended up burying a pull up jumper over DeShawn Stevenson to put Miami up 93-89. The Hawks missed at the other end and Ray Allen iced the game with a pair of free throws in the final moments.

Jeff Teague turned in his best game of the season finishing with 20 points and 11 assists. Teague hit 7-8 field goal attempts including back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter. Anthony Morrow came off the bench to score 17 points. Josh Smith finished with 13 points and eight rebounds but was just 6-19 from the floor. Kyle Korver chipped in 11 points while Al Horford added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Chris Bosh led the way for the Heat with 24 points. LeBron James missed out on a triple-double by a single assist finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Ray Allen added 17 points off the bench while Mario Chalmers chipped in 12.

Atlanta falls to 2-2 on the season and prepares to embark on a four-game road trip to the west coast beginning in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Atlanta Hawks hold a 46-42 lead over the defending NBA Champs at halftime thanks to a solid performance from its bench in the first half. Atlanta's bench scored 21 of the team's 46 points in the first half.

Anthony Morrow has played sparingly this season but sparked the team in the first half scoring 12 points on 5-9 shooting. Josh Smith and nine points and four rebounds while Al Horford and Kyle Korver added six points each. Jeff Teague has four points and a game-high six assists at the break.

LeBron James leads the Heat at halftime with 13 points. Chris Bosh added 12 while Ray Allen chipped in 11 off the bench.

Both teams got a scare late in the half when Josh Smith and LeBron James banged knees. Both players headed to the locker room with under a minute to go and there is no word yet on the severity of the injury for either player.

The Atlanta Hawks will have their hands full tonight when they square off against the defending NBA Champs the Miami Heat. However, the task did get a little bit easier when it was announced that Dwyane Wade will not play due to a cold.

Mike Miller or perhaps Ray Allen could step into the starting lineup in place of Wade. Drew has already announced his starting lineup of Jeff Teague, Deshawn Stevenson in the backcourt with Kyle Korver, Josh Smith and Al Horford up front. Either Smith or Stevenson could draw the assignment on LeBron with Wade out depending on how Erik Spoelstra decides to replace the perennial All-Star in the lineup.

Wade has started all five games for the Heat this season and is averaging 20.4 points per game on 57 percent shooting.

Following today's shootaround, Larry Drew announced his starting lineup for tonight's game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat at Philips Arena. Drew opted to go with his more conventional starting lineup of Jeff Teague and DeShawn Stevenson in the backcourt. Kyle Korver and Josh Smith will man the forward positions with Al Horford in the middle.

As far as matchups go for tonight's game, expect to see a lot of Josh Smith guarding LeBron James with Stevenson matched on Dwyane Wade. That will leave Kyle Korver likely matched against a perimeter shooter like Shane Battier.

Drew said on Friday that he hadn't ruled out using the big lineup that he deployed against the Indiana Pacers with Zaza Pachulia at center alongside Josh Smith and Al Horford at the forward positions. Stevenson will be making his second start of the season and may also draw his share of time opposite LeBron.
