Georgia senior DE Abry Jones (ankle) has been ruled out hours before the Bulldogs and Nebraska kick off this year's Capital One Bowl.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Abry Jones will miss the team's Captial One Bowl game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Tuesday while continuing to recover from ankle surgery, according to Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph.

Jones' status for the game has been up in the air for weeks. The senior defender initially thought he'd be able to go, but head coach Mark Richt voiced his concerns on Monday about whether or not Jones would be capable of playing at full speed. Richt previously announced that Jones would be a game-time decision, but the Bulldogs have now decided to rule out Jones well before kickoff.

Jones was injured in the Bulldogs' loss to South Carolina on Oct. 6. In six games this season, Jones racked up 17 tackles. His best year was in 2011, when he accounted for 48 tackles, seven of which resulted in lost yardage, and four sacks.

Georgia and Nebraska will kick off the 2013 Capital One Bowl from Orlando, Fla., at 1 p.m. ET.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Abry Jones is improving, but injuries are starting to pile up for the Bulldogs ahead of the Capital One Bowl.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Abry Jones is running again at practice as he tries to return to action in time for the 2013 Capital One Bowl. Jones is still limited from contact, according to Marc Weiszer of Dog Bytes Online. Jones had surgery on his ankle after injuring it against the Kentucky Wildcats on Oct. 20 and missed the rest of the regular season.

Other Bulldogs that were limited at Tuesday's practice included wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell with a strained groin, linebacker Mike Gilliard with a strained hamstring and wide receiver Rhett McGowan with a sprained wrist. Those that missed practice for the Bulldogs include nose guard John Jenkins with a concussion, running back Richard Samuel IV with a separated shoulder and wide receiver Tavarres King with a strained hamstring.

Jones missed a significant portion of the regular season after undergoing ankle surgery, but there is a chance he'll be healthy enough to play against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Abry Jones missed his team's first bowl practice Wednesday, but head coach Mark Richt said the senior hasn't been ruled out for the game.

"I know his intention is to rehab and get ready to play," Richt said. "He was making progress towards that goal. Do I know whether he’ll be ready to or not? I don’t know that. We’ve not counted him out by any means."

Jones suffered an ankle injury in October and underwent surgery shortly thereafter, ending his season. He had 17 tackles prior to the injury, including one for a loss. He started all 14 games for Georgia in 2011, finishing that year with 48 tackles, including four sacks. He appeared in more than 40 games over the course of his Georgia career.

The Bulldogs are up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 2013 Capital One Bowl, which is scheduled for Jan. 1.

Jones' ankle injury may heal in time for Georgia's bowl game.

Injured Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Abry Jones could return in time to play in the team's bowl game, according to head coach Mark Richt. "Abry's not out. Abry's lost significant time. But we do believe he's got a good shot of playing in the bowl," Richt said.

Jones injured an ankle earlier in the season and had surgery last month. He was initially pronounced out for the season by Richt.

Prior to the injury, Jones had accumulated 17 tackles, including one for a loss, as well as four quarterback hurries. He started all 14 games for the Bulldogs last season, and finished the year with 48 tackles, including four sacks. Over the course of his collegiate career, Jones has appeared in 39 games, making 20 starts. He had 89 career tackles heading into the 2012 season; 2011 was his first as a regular starter for Georgia.

An ankle injury has ended Abry Jones' season.

Georgia defensive end Abry Jones will miss the rest of the season because of an ankle injury, according to The Telegraph.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said on his radio show Monday night: "He's done for his senior year, and he's not gonna play again for Georgia."

Jones suffered the ankle injury in the first quarter of Georgia's 29-24 win over Kentucky on Oct. 20.

In seven games this season, Jones had 17 tackles and no sacks. Jones, a senior, will finish his Georgia career with 106 total tackles and five sacks.

Last season, Jones finished the year with 48 tackles and four sacks in 14 games.

Even without their talented defensive end, the Bulldogs have been on a tear. After losing their only game of the season to South Carolina on Oct. 6, Georgia has won three games in a row, including one over previously ranked No. 2 Florida.

Georgia travels to play Auburn at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Georgia sophomore Ray Drew is ready to step in for the injured Abry Jones at defensive end.

Georgia sophomore defensive end Ray Drew is going to start against Florida on Saturday for the injured Abry Jones. Drew hasn't seen a lot of time this season, but through his limited play and practice experience, the sophomore out of Thomasville said he feels like he's ready to go against the Gators, via the Athens Banner-Herald:

"This is what I've been waiting on. This is why you come to school to play football – to play in big games like this. It's time to put up or shut up. That's the way I'm looking at it."

Bulldogs' head coach Mark Richt believes Drew is ready, too. It's not like the Dawgs' haven't seen the potential of the 6'5, 284-pound former linebacker. Last season, his one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss against Vanderbilt earned Drew SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Jones is likely out for six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left ankle, according to his high school coach. All that Richt would confirm is that Jones will miss the Florida game. Jones tore a ligament in his ankle during the first quarter of Georgia's 29-24 win over Kentucky last Saturday.

Jones also sprained his ankle earlier in the season, which forced him to miss the Tennessee game.

Georgia is expected to be without Jones for the rest of the regular season.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Abry Jones will miss about six weeks after undergoing surgery on his left ankle, according to his high school coach. Jones tore a ligament in the ankle during the first quarter of Georgia's 29-24 win over Kentucky last Saturday.

When asked about the situation, head coach Mark Richt said only that Jones would miss this weekend's game against Florida. "He won't play this week is all that I can confirm," Richt said. "There's reasons for that, but that's what I'll confirm that this point."

Jones also sprained his left ankle against Vanderbilt on Sept. 22, which forced him to miss Georgia's game against Tennessee the following week. If he does have to sit out for the next six weeks, he will miss the rest of the regular season.

Jones has 17 tackles this season, including one for a loss. He started all 14 games for Georgia last season and finished the year with 48 tackles, including four sacks.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Abry Jones is out for Saturday's game against the Florida Gators with an ankle injury. Is there any indication as to how long he will be out?

Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Abry Jones will be out for Saturday's game against the Florida Gators with an ankle injury. Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt confirmed this to Athens Banner-Herald writer Marc Weiszer. Richt will not confirm whether Jones has had ankle surgery or how long he will be out of action.

The 6'3, 308-pound lineman has recorded a total of 17 tackles, six of them solo through six games. Last year against the Gators, Jones recorded two solo tackles and a sack. Jones has not been as effective on the pass rush this season, recording no sacks through six games as compared to four in 14 games last season. He also pressured the quarterback 20 times and forced a fumble during his junior year.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play the Gators on Saturday at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. The game will be televised live on CBS with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
